I am also excited to learn what Chinese people do for fun and how to speak the Chinese language. I want to learn how to do math in China. My favorite parts about Chinese camp this summer is that I get to learn how people in a different place live and I get to learn about their culture. And I am very excited to try Chinese dumplings
Hi, my name is Angelina. I am most excited to see The Forbidden City. I am also most excited to learn how to play Chinese games. I want to learn how to speak lots of Chinese words. My favorite part about Chinese camp this summer is Chinese crafts and that is why I'm so excited. The food I am most excited to try is Chinese noodles.
My name is Grady. I have been learning about China for about a year and a half and have been learning Chinese that long too. The way that we learn Chinese is every Thursday we go in to school 1 hour earlier and we call Mrs. Mo in China. She teaches us the Chinese language through video chat. It is a hard language to learn, but I like learning something new. My favorite word in Chinese is 再见 zài jiàn. It means goodbye. We are hoping to go to China this summer to visit our Chinese friends. I am excited about going to China because I really want to see the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City. I can't wait to eat Chinese dumplings again, and I am also excited to try McDonald's in China!
My name is Grahm. I have been studying Chinese since Chinese Club started about two years ago. I am looking forward to go to China this summer! I am most excited to see The Great Wall of China and excited to learn more about the culture. I now have friends there from video chatting during Chinese classes! We had visitors from China stay at our house for two weeks this passed summer and they attended Chinese Camp with me at Emerson Elementary. I can't wait to see my friends and to try some more of their cuisine. I already love rice and dumplings! This summer is going to be so much fun!
I am Grahm's mom, Olivia, and I have the pleasure to accompany my son on this journey with his Chinese Club from Emerson Elementary. We accommodated an eleven year old boy and his Mom from China for two weeks this passed summer. We also had a ten year old boy stay with us! I am most excited to see my new friends, tears were shed when we said our goodbyes. I'm anxious to explore Westlake, visit a tea plantation, and hike the Great Wall of China! It's going to be fun helping out at camp since I had to work when the camp was here in the U.S.! I love to travel and learn about all cultures so I'm going to totally immerse myself, learn as much as possible, and observe all of the new experiences I have along the way.
My name is Jennifer, I am a second grade teacher at Emerson Elementary. I have been supporting the students learning about China for the last year or so. I helped with summer camp in the Summer of 2017 when the Chinese students came to visit us in Westerville! What a rewarding experience that was. It was amazing to see students from two different cultures with some language barriers work together and teach each other. My favorite part of the Chinese camp over the summer was the showcase at the end of camp. The Chinese parents cooked a traditional meal for everyone, and the American students performed the Chinese (and vice versa) versions of The Three little Pigs, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I am excited about traveling to China with the Emerson students and parents! I am most excited to experience the authentic Chinese culture firsthand. Being immersed in the language, seeing a city and artifacts thousands of years old and, experiencing it all with my American students and the Chinese the students is a once in a lifetime experience
My name is Shannon Goebeler. I am a third grade teacher at Emerson Elementary. I have been part of immersing students here in Westerville with the culture, people, food, and language of China for the past 2 years. I helped run Summer Camp 2017 here in Westerville, Ohio when Chinese families came to visit us. What an amazing experience! We went all over central Ohio with our visitors. It was fun to experience our life and locations through their eyes - like the zoo, a farm, the grocery store, COSI, the pool, and more. My favorite part was watching the kids learn and grow from each other. When we go to China, I am most excited to experience life in another culture. Learning about the people, the food, the history and traditions of a country that is thousands of years old will be something I can share with students for years to come! It is a once in a lifetime trip.
My name is Asher. I am most excited to visit the Great Wall of China. I am also very excited to continue to learn Chinese. I have been learning about China for over year and have been studying the Chinese since the 1st grade. When I was in the 1st grade I would go to school earlier to video chat with my Chinese pen pals. I have never studied Chinese before. My favorite part of the Chinese camp was making art working. I am excited to try Kung Pao Chicken in China.
My name is Laney. I am very excited to go China. I particularly want to see the Great Wall of China and learn more about it. I also want to try dumplings again. I have been learning, and still am, Mandarin Chinese since 2016. My favorite part about the previous camp is that I made new friends. One of my new friends is Dora. I can’t wait to see her again in China!
My name is Drew. I really want to see the Terracotta Warriors because I have seen some things associated with Chinese Mythology and I want to learn more about the mythology. I have been learning about China since my sister has been in Chinese club at Emerson. My favorite part about Chinese camp this summer was getting to know the people that stayed with us the whole time and making friends by playing games like Uno and Sequence with them. I also enjoyed going to a Clippers baseball game with them. They taught me how to play badminton too!
Teacher / Mom
My name is Amanda Miller. I am a parent of 3 Westerville students and a teacher at Genoa Middle School. I am most excited about the friendships we’ve developed with our Chinese penpals. We hosted eight Chinese people throughout the two weeks this past summer. One mom and daughter was with us whole time. Her English was certainly better than my Chinese, but we still had trouble communicating. We used a lot of Google Translate and did a lot of laughing when Google came up with something completely different then what we said. We cooked for each other, played games and shopped together. And even though we had little conversation, we hugged at the airport with a few tears in our eyes. I am so thankful my daughter has made friends in China through Mrs. Mantenieks class, but now I feel I will have forever friends in China as well. I am looking forward to meeting our friends at their homes and traveling the country with them in this unique and exciting opportunity. I believe this trip will help my children develop their world view and appreciation of different cultures that they will carry throughout their lives.
My name is Josh. In China, I am most excited to see Dora. I am most excited to learn about the Great Wall. I know that China has pandas and bamboo. I want to learn about all the animals that are in China. My favorite part about having Chinese friends stay with us was when they cooked food for us and then they would tell my brother, “Drew, eat!” The food I am most excited to try are the pancakes. This will be my second time on the airplane!
My name is Steve. I am most excited to see the great wall of China. I am most excited to learn about Chinese history.
Ni hao! I’m Kate, I taught third grade at Emerson and my first Emerson class, current fifth graders, started corresponding with Ping and her students. We learned a lot together about the culture of China. This simple correspondence grew into an amazing partnership with Ping and her students. Some of my students were so dedicated that they came to school early once a week and studied the Chinese language; some of them are still studying Chinese before school with Ping “wechatting” from China! We have all grown close with Ping and had an amazing experience with her and the twelve students who came to America last summer. We can’t wait to go this summer and see our friends in their own city. They are very proud of their culture and eager to share it with us. I am most excited to immerse myself in the busy city of Hangzhou and share a week with our hosts and some great Emerson families. We are a very lucky bunch to have this opportunity!
